Nearly two decades, that’s how long Big Eye Deers has been growing, adapting, and moving forward.

And after finishing an Ironman recently, I’ve realised that longevity in business feels a lot like the marathon at the end of the race. It’s where everything you’ve built, the resilience, the focus, the experience, all comes together.

There are a great many parallels between running an eCommerce agency for nearly two decades and completing an Ironman. Business has taught me the same lessons I’ve learned through endurance sport.

Build the engine, not just the sprint.
Progress comes from structure. Phases and cycles of training work in triathlons, and it works in agency life too. We plan in seasons, not weeks, so the team can stay consistent and perform all year.

Consistency beats intensity.
I crossed the line at Ironman Italy after 11 gruelling hours of racing. It wasn’t one great session that got me there, it was turning up every day, building consistency and doing the work. The same goes for platform builds. Reliable, incremental progress compounds over time.

Pace early, finish stronger.
Go out too hard and you’ll burn out. We take the same view with projects. Stay steady, stay in control, and protect the long term goal.

Control what you can. Manage what you can’t.
In racing, conditions can change fast and you cannot always control what happens to you or around you. In eCommerce, it’s markets, tech, and client demands. The key is to stay calm, adapt quickly, and keep moving forward.

Data guides the effort.
I use training apps, plot my stats and listen to my body to know when to push or pull back. We use GA4, New Relic, and Klevu for the same reason, to make smart, data led decisions that keep things moving in the right direction.

Energy is the real currency.
Whether it’s training or leading a business, energy management matters more than time. Protect recovery, prioritise focus, leave space and time to evaluate and the quality of work stays high.

You never go alone.
No one gets through an Ironman without a huge support network of coaches, physios, family and experts. Same in business. Your team, clients, and partners are the ones who make the hard stuff possible.

After nearly two decades, I’ve learned there’s no secret formula.
Just discipline, patience, and purpose.

Treat business like an endurance build.
Plan well. Show up. Adapt. Finish strong. Then start again.
