Using open source platform Magento, we designed and developed an online store that could rival that of Topshop, Asos and Burton. The site was built with usability and continuity at the forefront of the design; It was important to the marketing department that the stores identity tie-in with the unions already established branding; evident in our choice of colour pallet and design layout.

We optimised the entire site so its responsiveness is second to none, and gave the homepage a scrolling banner to direct users to certain areas. Product pages contain large product images, unique colour swatches and size charts; a dynamic add to cart functionality was added, along with a seamless transaction process at the checkout. Account holders can now track their orders during the delivery process or even opt to collect from the union which has heightened the overall UX- Functionality that was otherwise non-existant in the previous shop.

With Magentos user-friendly admin area, the marketing department can now easily manage their sales, inventory and promotional offers from one place, meaning increased admin side productivity and responsiveness. Bristol SU can now predict, respond and adapt to changing consumer behaviours; pivotal to showcasing their great range of merchandise and ultimately turning their stock into profit.

Magento is SEO friendly; its websites and products are picked up by Google Base Indexing, and statistics can easily be generated to analyse sales against traffic to the website. Magento stores are brimming with google search technology to ensure its websites have the best chance of getting found. Bristol SU noticed that within a few days of going live, the new store had already had a much larger volume of hits and sales than before.

Like Bristol, Student Unions need attractive, fully functional web stores to drive sales, attract visitors, and ultimately make money. We’ve proved that this needn't cost the earth nor be hugely time consuming.
